Overview
Peroral gallbladder endoscopic surgery (GB-NOEES) follows the mouth, esophagus, gastrointestinal tract, bile duct, and cystic duct to reach the gallbladder. It avoids an abdominal incision, gallbladder removal, and an incision through the gallbladder wall, offering a new ultra-minimally invasive route for appropriately selected patients who wish to preserve gallbladder function.
Clinical significance
In complex biliary disease, NOEES can combine gallstone extraction, gallbladder-polyp removal, and treatment of common bile duct stones. The clinical goal is to complete diagnosis and treatment in one procedure while preserving the gallbladder and its function whenever appropriate.
Clinical translation and limitations
The team has used a peroral route to remove common bile duct stones, gallstones, and gallbladder polyps in a single treatment while preserving the gallbladder and avoiding an abdominal incision. Individual eligibility, procedural risk, and follow-up must be assessed by a specialist.
